After taking a few weeks off, the Charlotte Roller Girls are back to practice and gearing up for the 2013 season! We are incredibly excited for the new year and what we have planned!
To kick off our first week back, we will be joining Hands On Charlotte for their annual MLK Call to Service event this Saturday, January 19. You may have already seen a few of us on Wilson’s World on Tuesday’s Fox News Rising. We were up early to help Hands On Charlotte (HOC) prepare for Saturday’s main event.
Each year HOC – a nonprofit volunteer service organization – honors Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., by organizing special projects to help provide assistance to nonprofits, schools and other service providers around the area. This year HOC has three simultaneous “volunteer fairs” held at Harding University High School, East Mecklenburg High School and Blythe Elementary School. Volunteers can pay tribute to the legacy of Dr. King by joining these “fairs” and taking part in a multitude of various volunteer opportunities ranging from wrapping presents for children living in local shelters to sorting donated food and clothing. The fairs will run from 10am until 2pm and, as “drop in” events, volunteers are welcome to come for any bit of time they can (you do not have to attend all 4 hours).
Some of our skaters will be at Harding University High School and East Mecklenburg High School from 10am – 2pm. We hope you’ll join us in remembering a truly remarkable man and honoring him by helping others. Every bit helps!
